How to Build a FPS in 15 Minutes with ROBLOX

ROBLOX FPS ScreenshotBy the time the ROBLOX Content Team finished developing ROBLOX Base Wars FPS, we had accumulated a number of powerful scripts that quickly turn a standard ROBLOX game into a class-based, first-person shooter (FPS). Recognizing the power of the scripts, we packaged them in a FPS plugin for ROBLOX Studio and put them to the test.

Do they make it possible to create an FPS in 15 minutes?

The answer is a resounding yes. If you don’t believe it, watch this video, in which ROBLOX’s own Luke Weber and Rohan Karnik go from nothing to a fully functioning FPS game in 15 minutes. (We’ve edited the video for brevity.)

Behind the ROBLOX Booth at Maker Faire 2012

ROBLOX and Maker Faire LogosIf I had to sum up Maker Faire Bay Area 2012 in 10 words, I’d say, “a little bit of everything, nothing run-of-the-mill.” Last weekend, the San Mateo County Event Center was packed with DIY creators, tech companies, schools and organizations, showing projects from 3D printing – oddly captivating to watch – six-legged robots and hacked devices to world-record paper airplanes and armed garden gnomes.

For the record, that excludes all the stuff that required too much space to fit in a building – the giant dinosaur covered in speakers, the pedal-powered music stage and the mutated bicycles, to name a few.

ROBLOX Users Love Water

Water Physics and BuoyancyAnd what world builder or game designer wouldn’t? Early in the week, we took a deep look at our upcoming water simulation and buoyancy physics. Most of the feedback we received was positive, and it sounds like the ROBLOX community is collectively champing at the bit to implement water into their games. We also heard your reaction to the water texture – we’re working on it for the official release.
